Hemkund Sahib - Highest Gurudwara in the World
Hemkund Sahib is the Gurudwara situated at the highest altitude of 4329 mts. It is located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand near the Valley of Flowers. This holy shrine got its name from the glacial lake Hemkund, adjacent to the Gurudwara whose literal meaning is the ‘Lake of Snow’.
This pilgrimage place of Sikhs is dedicated to the tenth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji (1666-1708), and also finds its mention in Dasam Granth, a work dedicated to Guru Ji himself. A small temple of Lakshman, the brother of Lord Rama is also bedecked on the shore of Hemkund Lake. Hemkund Sahib, also known as Gurudwara Sri Hemkund Sahib, is a Sikh pilgrimage site and place of worship in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India. It is located at an elevation of over 15,000 feet in the Himalayan ranges and is one of the world’s highest Gurudwaras.
The site is dedicated to Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru, and is mentioned in the holy Granth Sahib. It is believed that Guru Gobind Singh meditated by the banks of Hemkund Lake in one of his earlier births, and that he spent 10 years meditating there. The site’s name comes from the glacial lake Hemkund, which means “Lake of Snow”
